Environment and Sustainability
Maitreya
Project's commitment to environmentally sound, sustainable development
is a fundamental principle.
The demanding design brief for the Maitreya Project is that it must enhance the lives of those using the Project and the lives of those living in the region. This can only be achieved by constantly and rigorously revisiting the spirit contained within the modern definition of sustainable development which is: "Improving the quality of life of the present population without compromising the ability of future generations to achieve the same or higher quality of life."
The sustainable approach will produce a highly tested and proven solution that is in harmony with the local climate and environment.
The
Project is commissioning environmental consultants to conduct full environmental
impact assessments. This includes water harvesting, water recycling and
management, waste management, and pollution control. The process of assessment
will be ongoing throughout the construction phase, and thereafter during
operation.
The studies will identify environmental sensitivities that could be affected by the Project's activities and any other environmental concerns relevant to the Project's implementation. The studies will generate baseline information that will facilitate a comprehensive, phased environmental management plan.
A sustainable society must seek to protect and enhance the environment, meet social needs, and promote economic success.
For the Maitreya Project to achieve the aim of promoting such a sustainable society the Project's design process will:
- Ensure that water, energy and other natural resources, are used efficiently and with care.
- Minimize waste, then re-use or recover it through recycling, composting or energy recovery and finally sustainably dispose of what is left.
- Limit waste to levels that do not damage natural systems.
- Safeguard and promote health and amenity through safe, clean, pleasant environments.
- Meet needs from locally available resources wherever possible.
- Maximize local access to training and skills development.
- Give full consideration to the social and community impacts of decisions.
- Work to create a vibrant local economy that gives access to satisfying and rewarding work without damaging the local, national or global environment.
