A Universal Education pilot school with 500 pupils from kindergarten to Class 12 is already established in Bodhgaya, the place of the Buddha's enlightenment, in Bihar state. Further developments are planned for Bodhgaya, and also for Kushinagar in the state of Uttar Pradesh, that will include primary, secondary and vocational education.

Maitreya Education Project also plans to create other schools in Bodhgaya and Kushinagar that will emphasise Mahayana Buddhist philosophy and practice.
